Nature Reserves in Cape Town & the Western Cape

1. Cederberg Wilderness Area
   

   The Cederberg offers hikers hundreds of rocky overhangs, including huge and impressive weathered sandstone formations like the Wolfberg Arch and the Maltese Cross, as well as caves with fine examples of rock art. These paintings vary in age between 300 and 6 000 years. Babooons, dassies, grey rhebok, klipspringers, duiker and grysbok are fairly common in the Cederberg.

   
2. Limietberg Nature Reserve
   

   The terrain is rugged, with steep kloofs and deep valleys and a number of interesting historical features may be seen while hiking in the reserve - Bushman paintings, a disused manganese mine, and a cross erected by Italian prisoners of war.

   
3. De Hoop Nature Reserve
   

   De Hoop Nature Reserve is approximately 34 000 ha in size and one of the largest natural areas managed by CapeNature. It is a favourite destination for hikers, cyclists, bird watchers and whale watchers. De Hoop is important for the conservation of lowland fynbos for it has the largest conserved area for this rare vegetation type. You could eveb catch a glimpse of the rare bontebok and Cape mountain zebra, as well as eland, grey rhebuck, baboon, yellow mongoose, caracal and the occasional leopard.

   
4. Anysberg Nature Reserve
   

   The reserve offers the visitor some of the most striking scenery in the Karoo as well as fascinating animals and plants. Numerous archaeological sites are dotted over the reserve and there are bushman paintings depicting scenes from the past and ruins dating from the late 1700s. A two-day guided horse trail is available and mountain bikes and kayaks can be rented from the office.

   
5. Swartberg Nature Reserve
   

   A proclaimed World Heritage Site, this area was clearly used by the San for many centuries, as evidenced by the numerous rock paintings and artifacts found in caves all over the reserve. Attractions and activities include picnicking, a Norwegian mill, angling in the Gamka River, sightseeing, relaxing and hiking in this natural paradise.

   
6. Gamkaberg Nature Reserve
   

   The reserve was established in 1974 in order to conserve a local population of endangered Cape mountain zebra and their natural habitat. The terrain is rugged, with mountainous plateau incised by deep ravines.

   
7. Goukamma Nature Reserve
   

   The nature reserve includes a long beach, an extensive dune field with some of the highest vegetated dunes in South Africa, the Goukamma River and estuary, and the unique Groenvlei lake, which has no in-flowing river and no link to the sea.

   
8. Keurbooms River Nature Reserve
   

   The reserve incorporates an estuary and a river, and a variety of habitats are conserved including the relatively unspoilt riverine gorge, patches of Knysna forest along the flood banks and in protected kloofs, and coastal fynbos.

   
9. Robberg Nature Reserve
   

   The ecology of the Robberg Peninsula is similar to that of other rocky headlands on this coastline. It presents a fine example of how plants and animals adapt to the interacting influences of land and sea.

   
10. Cape Point Nature Reserve
    

    Cape Point is the southernmost point of the Cape Peninsula and is only 25 minutes drive from Cape Town. Hikers will love walking along the cliffs, taking in the coastal scenery and strolling along the beach with the mountain as a magnificent backdrop. Take some time to visit the lighthouse -it's the most powerful on the South African coast.
